CMU, Pitt form search committee for replacement as Shawn Brown leaves for HPE
Shawn Brown has stepped down from his position as director of PSC. He is leaving to take on a strategic corporate opportunity at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE).
Carnegie Mellon University’s (CMU’s) Curtis Meyer, Otto Stern Professor of Physics and associate dean of research for the Mellon College of Science, and the University of Pittsburgh’s Michael J. Becich, associate vice chancellor for informatics in the health sciences and chair of the department of biomedical informatics, have been selected to serve as interim co-directors of PSC. The two universities will work together to form a search committee to find the center’s next director.
Brown was appointed director of PSC, a joint research center of CMU and Pitt, in 2019. Under his direction, PSC deployed the Bridges-2 advanced research computer and the Neocortex experimental artificial intelligence system. In that time PSC also gained leadership of the $7.5-million National Science Foundation-funded Resource Allocations Marketplace and Platform Services (RAMPS) project, which will use a democratized method for allocating time to a broader group of researchers on the NSF’s Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem (ACCESS) network of supercomputers. In collaboration with Jonathan Silverstein at Pitt, PSC also acquired joint leadership of the Consortium Organization and Data Coordinating Center within the National Institutes of Health’s Cellular Senescence Network (SenNet).
